April Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

This month is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), which highlights sexual assault as a public health issue and promotes the need to prevent sexual violence. SAAM has been recognized annually since 2001, and it’s supported by the  National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in six women and one in 33 men have reported experiencing a completed or attempted rape in their lives.

This year, SAAM focuses on sexual violence prevention at university campuses, where an estimated one in five women will experience a sexual assault before she graduates.
