ARVs Extend Life Expectancy 11 Years in Rural South Africa
Antiretroviral (ARV) drugs in rural South Africa have increased life expectancy by more than 11 years and greatly decreased HIV risk, according to two studies published in the journal Science and reported by the Los Angeles Times. Life expectancy in 2003 was about 49 years and in 2011 was about 60 years. Advocates say these studies provide strong support for continuing the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
