South Africa Takes the Lead on Its HIV Efforts From PEPFAR
The United States has started the process of transitioning main responsibility in the fight against HIV/AIDS in South Africa to South Africans, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of State. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane signed the Implementation Plan for the Partnership Framework during Clinton’s recent visit to South Africa. The United States will continue to provide assistance through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), but South Africa will increasingly take the lead in implementing HIV programs and services.
