South African 'Sugar Daddies' Blamed for HIV in Schoolgirls
Aaron Motsoaledi, the South African minister of health, blames the high rate of HIV among school-age girls on older men paying younger girls to have sex (a.k.a. “sugar daddies”), GlobalPost reports. He said that 28 percent of schoolgirls in the country have HIV compared with 4 percent of schoolboys. Motsoaledi also said that 94,000 schoolgirls became pregnant in 2011 and more than 77,000 of them had abortions. About one in 10 South Africans have HIV.
