A new sperm freezing technique may benefit HIV-positive men by allowing them to use their own sperm to father children without transmitting the virus to their partners or offspring, according to an International Federation of Fertility Societies (IFFS) statement. Known as sperm vitrification, the process centrifuges sperm to remove plasma, suspends it in a sucrose solution and fast freezes it in liquid nitrogen. As a result, contaminating agents such as HIV and other viruses are removed.
