A short list of what to do in April

READ
Bagels and Grits: A Jew on the Bayou (University of Wisconsin Press, $26.95). Jennifer Anne Moses’s touching memoir reflects on her experiences as a non-practicing Jew from Washington, DC, who moves to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, volunteers at an AIDS hospice and reconnects with her religious roots. Tissues not included.

WATCH
Tongues Untied (frameline.org; $30). This year marks the 20th anniversary of the late Marlon Riggs’s moving film, Tongues Untied. It highlights homophobia in the black community, pop culture and the AIDS epidemic through Riggs’s  personal accounts as a gay black man in America. Your tongue will wag with praise.

LISTEN TO
Dark Was the Night (darkwasthenight.com;  $16.98/$29.98). Available on CD or vinyl, this compilation boasts over 30 songs from indie artists such as Feist and Arcade Fire. Proceeds benefit the Red Hot Organization, a global nonprofit that uses music to fight and raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic. Shine on.

DOWNLOAD
Corpus 7 (apla.org; free PDFs). The AIDS Project Los Angeles  and The Institute for Gay Men’s Health publish this biannual, bilingual journal of art, cultural criticism, poetry, short stories and humor that deals with issues affecting MSM, such as obstacles in HIV prevention. Prepare to be in total awe.
