Researchers at three universities have been awarded $4.7 million by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study how marijuana use can influence the development of neurological disorders in adolescents with HIV, The Gainesville Sun reports. Cognitive problems, including dementia, and sensory neuropathy (a nerve condition that causes pain and numbness in the extremities) have long been noted as side effects of long-term HIV therapies. It is also known that up to 40 percent of youth living with HIV use marijuana or other controlled substances. The University of Florida, the University of South Florida and the University of California at San Diego will lead the five-year study.
