How to Survive a Plague—the Oscar-nominated documentary about the history of AIDS treatment activism—will be adapted by ABC into a miniseries, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR). The scripted adaptation will go deeper into the stories of the characters in the film and go broader into the consequences for the LGBT civil rights movement. Filmmaker David France and producer Howard Gertler are joined by longtime Hollywood producer and casting director John Lyons as executive producers for the miniseries. France told THR the choice of ABC was influenced by its airing in 1977 of Roots, the Emmy-winning miniseries about a former slave and his descendants. “That to me was the most decisive and convincing fact in our discussion—this idea that we can do that again and that we can be that for the gay community,” said France.
