HIV a Growing Problem in Tanzania’s Prisons
Almost 9.2 percent of Tanzanian prisoners are HIV positive, according to a 2008 Human Rights report prepared by the country’s Legal and Human Rights Centre and reported on by IPP Media.
According to the article, the report reveals that jails in the East African nation are overpopulated. In June 2008, there were 39,951 prisoners, far surpassing the facilities’ official capacity of 12,298 inmates.
“There is no information on appropriate health facilitates for people living with HIV/AIDS in prisons,” said Legal and Human Rights Center advocate Clarence Kipobota.
Judge Edward Mwesiumo said the report should be used as a means to rectify the state of human rights in Tanzania.
