Tattoos that represent living with HIV are one way that some people living with the virus have chosen to identify one another and find self-acceptance, CNN reports. Tattooing HIV/AIDS-related symbols, such as the biohazard symbol and the AIDS ribbon, is more common among men who have sex with men (MSM). In 2009, MSM accounted for 61 percent of new HIV cases. HIV/AIDS-related tattoos, which perhaps first emerged as an act of defiance against conservative figures advocating that all people diagnosed with HIV be branded with visible tattoos, today can signal HIV status to potential partners or might provide a signal of solidarity with others living with HIV.
