Texas ASO Develops Innovative Treatment Model
A Texas AIDS service organization, the Valley AIDS Council, has developed a new treatment model to save money, increase access to care and encourage its patients who can manage HIV with minimal support to become more self sufficient, reports the Valley Morning Star.
The new model implemented this month places the ASO’s 1,500 patients in one of four categories based on their physical and mental health, their adherence to safe practices such as condom use and their willingness to take charge of their own health care.
According to the article, the idea for the model came about when officials noticed that their healthiest HIV-positive patients were missing appointments and were less dependent on their doctor compared with other patients. According to Fernando Garcia, MD, seeing healthier patients less frequently will free up time and resources for those who require more intensive HIV treatment. The model is expected to cut clinic costs by 25 percent and increase access to appointments by 20 percent.
