New Text Message...About HIV
A new program in Uganda hopes to use cell phones as a tool for creating awareness about HIV/AIDS in the country, reports Uganda’s Daily Monitor (monitor.co.ug, 2/11).
The program, a joint effort of nonprofit HIV education group Text to Change (TTC), the AIDS Information Center and mobile phone company Celtel Uganda, will be launched on February 14, Valentine’s Day. By providing health and awareness information through text messages, the groups hope to reach large masses of people, particularly youth.
“If so many people are accessing mobile telephones in sub-Saharan Africa, why not use them for health education?” Bas Hoefman, founder of TTC, told the Monitor.
The article notes that approximately 1.1 million people are living with HIV in Uganda.
