Along with preventive vaccines, researchers have been experimenting with therapeutic vaccines—immunizations to treat people who already have HIV. The hope is that such a vax could delay or ultimately do away with the need to take current HIV medications.

One such vaccine, Argos Therapeutics’ AGS-004, uses people’s own white cells and HIV to rally the immune system against the virus. In October, the company reported that AGS-004 performed well in a small study and that further trials are planned for this year.
