HIV Cases Among Transgender People Increasing in Thailand
Activists in Thailand say HIV rates are increasing in the transgender community, The Phuket News reports. No nationwide statistics track HIV among transgender people, but several surveys indicate rates are on the rise. A survey in the province of Chonburi found 11 percent of trans people had HIV overall, but the rate was 20 percent among those ages 29 and older. Activists expressed concern, especially for young trans people who engage in sex work and don’t get tested regularly for HIV.
