Global Fund Provides 2.8 Million People With HIV Meds in First Half of 2010

About 2.8 million people worldwide have received antiretroviral (ARV) drug treatments for HIV in the first half of 2010 through the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, according to a Global Fund report.

This marks a 22 percent increase from the same period last year, according to the report, which combined data from programs supported by the Global Fund in 144 countries.

According to the article, the Global Fund also provided more than 7 million people with TB drug treatments (a 30 percent increase from the same period last year) and a cumulative total of 122 million insecticide-treated bed nets to fight malaria.

The fund also distributed 2.3 billion condoms, and it helped 930,000 HIV-positive pregnant women receive treatment to reduce mother-to-child transmission of the virus.
