Ugandan Teachers Ditch Homework for Sex Work

Increasing numbers of Ugandan educators are turning to prostitution, which they say is far more lucrative than teaching, Ugandan news website Monitor Online reports (monitor.co.ug, 4/28).

According to a recent study, HIV prevalence among teachers is as high as 30 percent in Uganda, compared to its national prevalence rate of 6.7 percent.

Monitor Online reports that educators are drawn to the sex trade based on the increased economic opportunity prostitution provides. A primary teacher in Uganda earns roughly 130,000 shillings per month, while a prostitute can earn as much as 1.5 million shillings during that same time period.
