HIV-Positive Man Alleges Discrimination at U.K. Job Center

A man with HIV in the United Kingdom claims he was “humiliated” at a job center (a.k.a. employment office), BBC reports. Jayce Carberry alleges that staff at the Maidstone job center in Kent county made him disclose his HIV status within hearing distance of others and was told he had to see a disability advisor. Further, the advisor he spoke with at the center told him he had to speak with his legal team to determine if his HIV status had to be disclosed to other staff members. The U.K. Department for Work and Pensions told the BBC that people do not have to declare medical conditions when applying for jobseeker’s allowance (a.k.a. unemployment benefits).
