UNICEF: Mother-to-Child HIV Transmission Can Be Stopped
A new UNICEF study shows that mother-to-child HIV transmission can be stopped if the international community increased its support of universal access to HIV prevention and treatment, according to a UNICEF statement. The study points out that to achieve this goal, inequities based on gender, economic status, geographical location, education level and social status all must be addressed. Also needed is the increased ability to reach the hardest-hit communities, such as sub-Saharan Africa, where nearly 1,000 babies every day contract HIV from their mothers.
