Financial Hurdle at U.N. High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS

Public health leaders will face a big financial hurdle when they convene June 8 to 10 in New York City at the U.N. High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS, The Wall Street Journal reports. Their challenge is figuring out how to fund the fight against the disease through 2015 during the current global economic crisis. In 2010, HIV/AIDS funding from donor nations to developing nations fell for the first time. The funding issue has taken on a new urgency as a result of a landmark study showing that antiretroviral drugs make straight HIV-positive people 96 percent less likely to transmit the virus to their sexual partners. However, most people in the developing world don’t have access to or can’t afford meds.
