AFP News reports that on December 6, the United States announced that it will support Vietnamese health groups in launching a methadone program to fight HIV infection among that country’s injection-drug users (news.yahoo.com/AFP, 12/6).
“Our main goal will continue to be on preventing, and providing care and treatment for people living with HIV,” U.S. delegates said in a paper presented on Thursday at an annual AIDS-prevention donors’ conference in Hanoi.
AFP adds that the partnership will support six methadone rehabilitation sites throughout Vietnam to bolster an aggressive prevention campaign targeting at-risk groups, including drug users, sex workers and youth.
