Women Make Up Majority of Nigeria’s New HIV Infections

Approximately 61 percent of new HIV infections in Nigeria occur in women and young girls, the Vanguard newspaper/AllAfrica.com reports (allafrica.com, 3/27).

The data, released by the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), was presented at a workshop in conjunction with the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS).

“It is important for women to be in the forefront of the battle against the spread of HIV/AIDS,” said NACA’s director general, Professor Babatunde Oshotimehin. “When you look at the statistics, and you look at how the disease affects our women, it is important that we put women at the center of the control of this virus.”
