About 10 percent of young adults in a new study who tested positive for a sexually transmitted infection (STI) reported being abstinent for the past year, The New York Times reports. Published in the medical journal Pediatrics, the study also showed that half of those who reported being abstinent also said they had never had sex. The study used a nationally representative sample of 14,012 students. Those who reported sexual activity were twice as likely to contract an STI compared with those who reported no sexual activity. Women were more likely to test positive for an STI than men. African Americans were six times more likely than whites. Those without high school diplomas were three times more likely than high school graduates.
