The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) will provide $4.65 million in grants to oppose violence based on gender in more than 80 countries, according to the U.S. Department of State. Programs that prevent or respond to gender-based violence and whose efforts are tied into HIV prevention, treatment and care are eligible for grants of up to $100,000. Gender-based violence affects one in three women—and up to seven in 10 women in some countries—and triples their risk of contracting HIV. The threat of such violence makes it more difficult for women to arrange for safer sex, to access health services or to disclose their HIV status.
