New York State Health Care Providers Must Offer HIV Tests

As of Sept. 1, health care providers in New York State must offer all patients ages 13 to 64 a voluntary HIV test, UPI.com reports. The new law—an amendment to the New York Public Health Law—only requires spoken consent for HIV testing. Previously, the permission had to be in written form. “This state law will have its greatest impact here in New York City, where more than 107,000 residents are living with HIV/AIDS and thousands more do not know they are infected,” said Thomas Farley, the city’s health commissioner, in a statement.
