To spread awareness of HIV criminalization and the unjust prosecutions of HIV-positive people, the AIDS activist organization Queerocracy held a kiss-in demonstration June 26 in Greenwich Village’s Washington Square Park during New York City’s Pride Week.
Activists wearing pink “HIV Is Not a Crime” T-shirts formed a line in front of the park’s fountain while others passed out fliers and educated bystanders about HIV criminalization. They chanted, “Kissing doesn’t kill, prison does,” and “HIV is not a crime, there should be no jail time!”
At the designated time, participants paired off and jumped into the fountain and kissed each other for at least a minute (some kissed same-sex partners; others kissed partners of the opposite sex). At one point some couples switched partners. After climbing out of the fountain, participants marched through the park and onto the street, chanting and passing out more fliers about HIV criminalization.
