ACT UP New York Protests Hospital for Denial of PEP

ACT UP New York protested outside Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan for denying post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to a gay man, according to an ACT UP statement. The man contacted ACT UP after he feared he had just been exposed to HIV. ACT UP advised him to seek PEP at the hospital. The man contacted ACT UP again after hospital staff denied that PEP existed, which prompted him to leave the emergency room without the meds. (In general, PEP consists of taking three HIV meds for about four weeks to prevent the virus from taking hold.) The man received PEP from the hospital only after ACT UP intervened. Delaying PEP reduces its effectiveness, which is why timely access is so important.
