An audit by the New York State comptroller found $179,000 in “inappropriate or questionable” spending by the head of the taxpayer-funded Long Island Association for AIDS Care (LIAAC), Newsday reports.

Gail Barouh is the chief executive of the nonprofit AIDS organization who is under investigation. The report found that she used state funds for personal expenses, including $4,400 for gas and $4,700 for grocery store items that were not business related.

The state health department said it will recover the money from the Hauppauge-based LIAAC. A spokesperson for LIAAC said the group is correcting its “deficiencies” and has hired an accounting firm.

The Nassau County comptroller planned to audit LIAAC back in May 2011 but referred the case to the state comptroller and attorney general after the group failed to provide requested documents.

The state comptroller has forwarded its report findings to the state attorney general’s office.
