Florida Taxi Driver Claims He Was Fired Because He Has HIV

A lawsuit filed in federal court in Orlando, Florida, alleges HIV discrimination by the Mears Transportation taxi company against a former driver, the Orlando Sentinel reports. The driver, who is only identified by the initials S.G. in the suit, claims he was fired after he disclosed his HIV-positive status.

The man was hired in 2011 and fired in 2013. He tested HIV positive soon after being hired. He took medical leave many times, but the suit claims he “performed his job to satisfaction.” His supervisor and some co-workers allegedly accused him of “ugly things” in 2013 and he was then fired “with no real investigation.”

The suit claims discrimination under the Florida Civil Rights Act and the Americans With Disabilities Act, as well as violations of the Family and Medical Leave Act and retaliation. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission gave the driver a “right to sue,” but did not make any finding about the allegations.
