70 Months in Prison for HIV Fraud by Miami Clinic Director

Enrique Gonzalez, a former director of two HIV clinics in Miami, was sentenced to 70 months in prison—nearly six years—for his role in a $26.2 million fraud scheme, according to a statement by the U.S. Department of Justice. He also was sentenced to three years of supervised release and must pay $17.6 million in restitution to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Between 2002 and 2004, Gonzalez operated Physicians Med-Care and Physicians Health with his co-conspirators. The clinics purported to specialize in HIV care but were operated with the sole purpose of committing Medicare fraud. Gonzalez was a fugitive from justice since his indictment in 2008 until he was detained in Peru in 2011. He was extradited to the United States in 2012 and pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, to cause the submission of false claims and to pay health care kickbacks, and one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud.
