Mothers and Sons Gets Two Tony Nominations

Mothers and Sons, the Broadway play authored by Terrence McNally starring Tyne Daly, has been nominated for two Tony awards, The New York Times reports. The nominations are for best play and best leading actress in a play.

Daly plays the role of Katharine, a woman who lost her son to AIDS more than two decades ago. A sequel to the 1990 PBS teleplay Andre's Mother, the new play recounts her coming back into the life of her late son's ex-lover.

Author of such AIDS-related plays as Lips Together, Teeth Apart and Love! Valor! Compassion!, McNally is a four-time Tony winner. Known for the TV show Cagney & Lacey, Daly won a Tony in 1989 for best leading actress in a musical in Gypsy: A Musical Fable.

Mothers and Sons made its world premiere in 2013 at the Bucks County Playhouse in New Hope, Pennsylvania. To read our 2013 Q&A with McNally about the premiere, click here. To read the Times article, click here.
