Members of ACT UP New York and Occupy Wall Street staged a die-in during the January 1 inauguration of Bill de Blasio as mayor of New York City, according to an ACT UP statement. “Failed HIV Prevention” and “Prioritize HIV/AIDS Prevention” were among the slogans on signs. The protestors blamed Thomas Farley, the city’s health commissioner, for not publicizing post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) and deprioritizing publicity for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). They also wanted the new mayor to compensate for recent cuts to HIV/AIDS services, including prevention efforts.
