Human Rights Award to Honor Paul Semugoma at AIDS 2014

AIDS 2014Paul Semugoma, MD, a gay HIV/AIDS physician from Uganda, gave a passionate speech on behalf of LGBT and HIV-positive people during the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012) in Washington, DC, in which he also came out as gay. He went to South Africa after AIDS 2012 and has not returned to Uganda since then.

In recognition of his advocacy, Semugoma will be honored Sunday, July 20, with the Elizabeth Taylor Human Rights Award at the opening session of the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014) in Melbourne, Australia, according to an amfAR statement. An activist before his AIDS 2012 speech, Semugoma continues to speak out.

The award is presented by amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, of which the late actress was founding international chairman; The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation (ETAF), which she founded; and the International AIDS Society (IAS), the custodian of the biennial International AIDS Conference.
