The National Institutes of Health (NIH) should reduce its use of chimpanzees for medical research, according to an NIH-commissioned working group and reported by Agence France-Presse. The panel made more than two dozen recommendations on how to use primates as test subjects only when necessary. Their findings are now open for public comment before the NIH decides to implement them. The United States is the only industrialized country still using primates for medical research, especially for studies on HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C and malaria.
