AIDS 2014The late Robert Carr, PhD, MSW, was the former executive director of the International Council of AIDS Service Organizations (ICASO). He died of heart failure in 2011. In honor of his HIV/AIDS advocacy, a committee has selected the inaugural recipient of the Robert Carr Research Award, according to a statement by the International AIDS Society (IAS). In addition to IAS, the committee included the Johns Hopkins Center for Public Health and Human Rights, Human Rights Watch, ICASO and other experts.

The recipient is “Sex Work and Violence: Understanding Factors for Safety and Protection.” The collaborative research project brought together sex worker communities, sex work rights advocates and the United Nations, as well as researchers and governments from four Asia Pacific countries. The project was overseen by a regional steering committee of all parties, which was assisted by inclusive national working groups. The project was selected for its innovation, involvement and potential impact.

The award will be presented Monday, July 21, during the Robert Carr Memorial Lecture at the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014) in Melbourne, Australia.
