Tuesday, November 20, is the national Transgender Day of Remembrance, which commemorates all trans individuals, or those perceived to be trans, who have been murdered because of hate. The day was created in response to the murder of Rita Hester in 1998, which launched the Remembering Our Dead project and a vigil in San Francisco the following year. Events to mark the day are being held nationwide to raise awareness about the threat of violence faced by transgender people. In addition to violence, the trans community also is disproportionately impacted by HIV/AIDS.
