Turing Protest
Activists protest Turing Pharmaceuticals earlier this month.

The New York Attorney General is investigating Turing Pharmaceuticals, the company that created headlines and outcries when it raised the price of an AIDS-related lifesaving med 5,000 percent, reports The New York Times.

The inquiry appears to be centered less on the price hike and more on whether Turing violated antitrust rules by restricting distribution of the drug, Daraprim (pyrimethamine).

In a letter to Martin Shkreli, the 32-year-old hedge fund “bro” who runs Turing, the attorney general’s office requests a meeting with Shkreli and asks that the company keep all documents potentially related to the investigation.

“While competition might ordinarily be expected to deter such a massive price increase, it appears that Turing may have taken steps to prevent that competition from arising,” said the letter, according to the Times.

This isn’t the only investigation into Turing. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) asked the Federal Trade Commission to examine whether Turing and other companies violated antitrust laws.

Earlier this month, AIDS activists demonstrated against the price-gouging by holding a protest outside Turing’s Manhattan headquarters. Carrying a giant litter box with Shkreli’s face on it, they yelled, “Martin Shkreli is literally a parasitic shit so we brought him some kitty litter.” Click here for more info and to watch a video of the protest.
