Another one-pill-once-a-day HIV regimen may be coming soon. This one will combine two approved drugs—the nukes Viread (tenofovir) and Emtriva (emtricitabine)—with the experimental integrase inhibitor elvitegravir plus GS 9350 (it boosts blood levels of elvitegravir). So far, Gilead Sciences, which makes all four drugs, is conducting trials giving the combo pill to people new to HIV meds. The FDA approved the first one-pill-once-daily HIV combo, Atripla (the non-nuke Sustiva/efavirenz plus Viread and Emtriva), in 2006.
