The Governator has scored another one for HIV care by committing to boost prevention and services for African-American communities in five regions of California: Los Angeles, the Inland Empire, Sacramento and the Central Valley, San Diego and the San Francisco Bay Area. The statewide African-American HIV/AIDS Initiative signed into law last Thursday will centralize HIV data from around the state as well as information about services and funding. Although not a single California buck is associated yet with this Initiative, by 2008, the project is slated to spin off from the State Office of AIDS and become an independent, statewide clearinghouse for nonprofits. African Americans are among the most severely impacted by HIV and AIDS statewide and the least likely to receive quality care.
