Crystal methamphetamine may be showing signs of decline in the U.S., according to a new report from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The number of first-time users of the highly addictive drug, which has been linked to unprotected sex and HIV transmission, dropped from 318,000 in 2004 to 192,000 in 2005, compared to little or no change between 2002 and 2004. Also reported: a decrease in meth-related E.R. visits in San Francisco in 2006.
