I had lived in the south most of my life and grew up with a lot of loving southerns. Poverty as in a lack of money, time any direction for years of oppression of the peasant, myself inclulded . The lack of generation excess to eduction, healing or reconciliation for the poor or the ones that communities offer economic crumbs is heart breaking. The book Women and Children Last by Ruth Spidel points out we are all a cause. It is not just HIV for Diabetes is taking lives from the lack of knowlege.
This is one of the best articles I've read about living in the South with HIV. As an Alabama native with HIV, this article again brought to light the dicotomy of loving and hating where I'm from.

The one thing that every one has or could have is the right to vote. A single vote times thousands can swing an election. Organizing proper voter registration, transportation and education would push this effort into a results oriented endeavor. There is a parallel here with the deep south's civil rights movement. The same stigmas and prejudices afflict all poor people. The south also has relatively rich states like Texas, Florida, Georgia and N. Carolina. Don't throw away your vote, USE IT NOW!
