August 10, 2006—The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is giving $500 million to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria over five years—by far the largest nongovernmental donation to date. A $200 million portion will go to grants awarded this year, for which the Fund needs $500 million more. The announcement follows Warren Buffett’s $31 billion gift in June to the Gates Foundation.
