Thursday, August 4, 2005—The boxing community is picking a fight with the California Athletic Commission (CAC) for allowing an HIV positive boxer, super-featherweight Tommy Perez, to go three rounds with Guillermo Ruiz on June 3 in the Southern California city of Ontario. The CAC bans positive athletes from competing for fear the virus could be passed on through open wounds. But this time, somebody failed to notice (or misread?) Perez’s HIV test results—which were “inconclusive” before the fight and not officially “positive”untill a second test later on. It seems that the only blood splattered around the ring that night landed on the referee’s shirt and came from Ruiz. Nonetheless, Ruiz, the ref and the ref’s wife have all had HIV tests (they came up negative) and the ref has gone on post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
