There has been a 22-fold increase in people receiving antiretroviral medications since 2001, and the global rate of new HIV infections declined by nearly 25 percent between 2001 and 2009, according to a report released by the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). A record 1.4 million people started treatment in 2010, more than any year before. The reports also found that within the last decade, people were starting to adopt safer sexual behaviors and progress was being made in preventing new HIV infections among children. However, challenges remain. The report found significant treatment gaps in addition to increases of new infection among high-risk groups.
