Shannon L. Hader, director of the HIV/AIDS administration in Washington, DC, has abruptly resigned, The Washington Post reports.

After three years on the job, she was the longest-serving director in almost a decade. Hader’s resignation is effective July 15.

According to the article, when Hader took over the post the department had been ridiculed with dysfunction and incompetence. But her efforts led to the 2008 Epidemiological Update, which showed that 3 percent of DC residents are living with HIV/AIDS, one of the highest rates in the country.

Nnemdi Kamanu Elias, MD, the administration’s chief medical officer, will serve as interim director, said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty.
