AIDS apathy may be signing on the dotted line (a recent Gallup Survey found that private AIDS donations have dropped 22 percent since 1997), but some deep pockets are still shelling out for the cause. This tax season, macrosoftie Bill Gates, and his wife, Melinda, donated $25 million to the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), a nonprofit grant-distributor that focuses on the developing world.

The Gates gift, which doubled IAVI’s budget, was the largest in HIV history. “Bill and Melinda envision a world without AIDS,” said Gates spokesperson Trevor Neilson. “They’ve said all along that they’re going to give away the vast majority of their wealth.” Bill—worth a cool $58.4 bil—did not comment on his vision of a world sans the other A word (antitrust).
