Reputable new estimates expected this week from the Indian government may put the nation’s HIV-positive population at 3.5 million, vs. the 5.7 million previously estimated by UNAIDS. Over the past few months, various international reporting agencies have debated the Indian infection rate; the country was thought to have the largest number of HIV-positive people, but the new, lower figures may restore South Africa’s top ranking. The Indian government, meanwhile, is also slated to announce a new AIDS campaign that increases the prevention budget sixfold, to $3 billion.
