Tom, where is ANYONE whenever these "activists" begin pushing treatment delays? Where is any advocacy for a cure? Half the time, these people can't fall over themselves fast enough to argue against treatment or health-unless its PrEP for the HIV-, a larger market that leaves them salivating. If claims about HIV making a home in the brain shortly after infection are to be believed, ALL of these "activists" have a moral obligation to issue an immediate retraction. I doubt we'll see that soon.

It's bizarre that Levy would write a piece that states "The key question is whether the danger of inflammation...is more risky than the harmful effects of antiviral treatment." But neither mention or cite the 5.472-person SMART trial, which showed that antiviral treatment interruption doubled the risk of morbidity and mortality and that these outcomes were significantly associated with inflammatory biomarkers.

There are reports of strains of HIV that progress to AIDS in shorter time periods than some longer HIV drug clinical trials. For the people infected with those strains of HIV, waiting is not an option. BTW... where was Dr. Levy when (so called) "AIDS Activists" were fighting against the START study (because it would take money away from hep-B/C studies)? How many people have been cured of their HIV infection versus cured of their hep-C infection? The junkies are calling all the shots.

I met patients in the above 500 CD4+ T cell arm of ACTG019, who joined in early 1988, and who are still alive. I met many patients a decade later, who were too poor to access these grossly over-priced anti-HIV meds, who have long since died of AIDS. TPAN's Aware mag of Big Pharma ads recently highlighted one of the people who became infected and died without proper medical intervention. BTW, Jay's story about the Nairobi prostitutes not becoming infected is a hoax. He should know that.

All fine and good but not of much interest to me. If preventing HIV- people from getting HIV and HIV+ people from losing CD4 is a short sighted goal, tough luck. I doubt this guy sees patients in a clinic.
