Former U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop calls AIDS the “forgotten epidemic,” The New York Times reports. Koop made his remarks on a panel discussion at the 2010 National Summit on HIV Diagnosis, Prevention and Access to Care in Maryland. Kevin Fenton, director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and John Bartlett, a professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, joined Koop on the panel. They addressed the complacency surrounding HIV and the need to expand education and testing efforts, particularly among high-risk populations.
