In advance of the International AIDS Conference in Vienna, HIV/AIDS activists in Mexico are questioning their country's HIV criminalization laws, the reports. Thirty of Mexico's 32 states have laws criminalizing the transmission of HIV. Under Mexico's Federal Criminal Code, transmitting a sexually transmitted infection is punishable by jail time, fines and community service. Two Mexican states refer specifically to HIV and AIDS in their criminalization laws.
