A Michigan county is preparing to ask a court to force a man charged in two cases of failing to disclose his HIV-positive status to take antiretroviral (ARV) medications, The American Independent reports. The 51-year-old man turned himself in to local police in December, allegedly saying he had attempted to infect hundreds of people with HIV through unprotected sex and sharing needles. The man was subsequently placed under psychiatric hold, charged with two counts of failing to disclose his status, and is being held on $100,000 bond. If the man makes bail, a prosecutor in Kent County will ask the court to declare the man a health threat to others and force him to take ARVs, an unprecedented move. Advocates say that this is an incursion on the man’s rights and that no scientific evidence supports forcing medication.
